Colorado Auto Insurance
You are required to have a minimum amount of Colorado auto insurance in order to protect yourself and other drivers in case of accidents.
If you are at fault for an accident you are liable for all damages, whether they are to persons or to property. If it were not for insurance, you would have to pay for this amount out of your pocket. In some accidents this amount could be as much as $100,000. Most of us don't have enough money to cover this cost, so we have insurance as a safety. This insurance is known as liability insurance.
- Bodily Injury Liability
You are required to have at least $25,000 of bodily injury liability per person and $50,000 per accident. This will cover any medical expenses including pain and suffering for anyone that you injure as a result of your driving. It will not however cover injuries to you. For that coverage, you need some sort of medical insurance.
- Property Damage Liability
You are also required to have at least $15,000 property damage liability. This insurance will cover the cost of damages you cause to property as a result of your driving. This will not, however cover repair of your car. For that you need to have comprehensive or collision insurance, which will raise the cost of your premium, but it is not mandatory. These minimums are required by law, but it is recommended, in order to fully protect yourself that you increase these minimums. If you do not, any damage over these amounts is your responsibility to pay, so if you just have the minimum coverage, then you could be stuck with a large bill if you are at-fault in a large accident.
