In the province, you must have a minimum of $200,000 of auto insurance. This liability amount will go to cover medical expenses for yourself and other drivers.

  • Third Party Liability
  • With the minimum coverages, the insurance companies are required to cover you for $200,000 for injury and personal damage to others. This includes their medical expenses, and property damages, such as damage to their car. If the claim is higher then this amount, the insurance company will pay no more then $20,000 property damage, and you will be responsible for any amount over this limit.

  • Your Injuries
  • If you are injured, the insurance company will pay for a maximum of $50,000 of your medical bills, and up to $250 per week if you are not able to work because of your injuries for a maximum time of 104 weeks. If you were un-employed at the time fo accident, you will still receive $100 for a maximum of 52 weeks.

Just having liability will not cover damages that your car may receive when you are at fault for an auto accident. For that coverage, you will need to purchase comprehensive and collision coverage . This coverage is not required and is an optional coverage.

If you only purchase the minimum amount of liability insurance, and cause an accident over your liability amount, then you will be liable to pay for the remaining amount. If you are involved in a major accident, and have only the minimum coverage's you could be on the hook for several thousand dollars! Therefore, it is recommended that you increase your minimum liability amount to offer yourself full protection.

Increasing your liability coverage, or adding comprehensive and collision coverage's will raise your auto insurance premium.
