Quebec Auto Insurance

Quebec auto insurance is government run, which means there is no competition and you must buy the insurance from the government company, The Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec . The minimum liability coverage for Quebec is only $50,000.

The reason Quebec has such low minimum liability coverage, is that personal injury claims are prohibited in Quebec. The province will pay for all hospital and medical costs for all injuries due to car accidents. The province will also pay fixed amount of money for pain, suffering and loss of income. So if you are injured in a car accident in Quebec you are not allowed to sue the individual for personal injury, you will receive compensation from the province. The $50,000 is there to cover all damage to property within the province. It also covers personal injury and property damage in accidents that occur outside Quebec.

If you are killed in an accident, your family will be compensated for your death, but this amount depends on many factors.

The government run system is a double-edged sword. Sure the insurance companies cannot gouge you for insurance, but also you have no other options, or comparative prices. If you want to purchase insurance above the minimum, you may however purchase that from other privately run

If you wish to increase this minimum liability or wish to add comprehensive or collision coverage to your car, you can do so through a local broker, which can be found in our listings.
