State Farm auto insurance has grown from a small farming community auto insurance company to a company that insures more cars then any other company in North America. It was founded on June 7, 1922 by George J. Mecherle. George Mecherle started as a insurance salesman in Bloomington, in the state on Illinois. He did not agree with the fact that farmers had to pay the same insurance rates as non farmers. Taking this up with his superiors, they told him if he didn’t like their policies to start his own company. To their surprise he did!

In the beginning State Farm originated as a insurance company for farmers, as George J. Mecherle, a reitired farmer himself, thought that farmers drove less, and were less risk, so they should pay less for auto insurance. He started giving farmers reduced rates and discounts, which made his company very popular in the small farming community.

By 1942 it had grown to the largest auto insurer in the United States. State Farm is a mutual company, in that it does not have any share holders, it is owned by its policy holders. State farm has grown and expanded internationally, and now approxametly 1 in 5 cars are insured by State Farm. State Farm's has 17,800 agents and 68,000 employees that serve over 74 million auto, fire, life and health policies in the United States and Canada. The current CEO is Edward B. Rust, Jr.. State Farm continues to offer discounts for good, low risk drivers.
